"FUKU-BONSAI'S
1:10 PROJECT"
(Portal Page)

BONSAI IN POTS 1/10TH AS DEEP AS THEY ARE WIDE!  One of the first bonsai guidelines that I was taught was that the depth of the pot should ideally be the thickness of the bonsai's trunk.  If the pots were deeper, the pot would get more attention than the tree.  But most beginner bonsai have thin trunks and large root systems that cannot be growth in very shallow pots.

Over the years,  Fuku-Bonsai has continued to produce higher quality prepared bonsai stock and a major breakthrough is producing premium quality with stout interesting trunks within 1" of the soil line and a shallow compact root system within 1/2" of that soil line.  This makes possible the outstanding INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE.

As higher grade prepared bonsai stock are being developed it is increasingly possible for committed dedicated hobbyists to develop the discipline, skills, and techniques to grow bonsai in pots 1/10th as deep as they are wide.  In the future,  this may become part of our advanced workshops.  By sharing our progress, we hope you recognize that TRUE INDOOR BONSAI will continue to improve!  We invite you to email for more information as to how YOU can become a part of this project!     ~~~David W. SHALLOW POTTING BASICS (1a6a.html)
The ideal containers are Fuku-Bonsai plastic saucers that were developed in the 1970's to be used with dry gravel to serve as display saucers for our Hawaiian Lava Plantings. The 9" diameter saucer matches the pot used for our 8LS Living Sculpture.

A new challenge for a new era!  How the project was born and a photo series of our first efforts.

SHALLOW SAUCER ROCK PLANTING TECHNIQUES 1a6c.html
In bonsai, tall rock plantings are interpretations of dramatic natural cliffs. The thinner the rock, the greater the impression of height. Thinner rocks work especially well with shallow display trays.

TRAINING THE NEXT FUKU-BONSAI GENERATION 1a6d.html
By teaching how to pot into shallow 7" diameter saucers less than 3/4" deep, we set a new standard and newest staff begin their bonsai careers by mastering advanced techniques!
