"MAHALO" in the future!
By Jerry Meislik (Whitefish, Montana)

The first training session of Mahalo is just the first step in a long bonsai journey.  We positioned the tree for many potential possible futures.  Here are some possible futures for the bonsai:

Meislik MPBF future no. 1.jpg (12829 bytes)          Possible future design #1:   The "back" of the tree with a dropping right branch continuing the flow of the trunk.
Meislik MPBF future no. 2.jpg (15405 bytes)         Possible future design #2:   The "back" of the tree with a gentle drooping branch structure pulling the eye back to the base.
Meislik MPBF possible future no. 3.jpg (11332 bytes)          Possible future design #3:   The front of the tree emphasizing dramatic trunk movement and flow.

Meislik MPBF possible future no. 4.jpg (11188 bytes)

Possible future design #4:   A vertical cascade style moving away from the basal trunk.

Meislik MPBF possible future no. 5.jpg (14535 bytes)

Possible future design #5:  A right flowing trunk in a vertical cascading style.

Meislik MPBF future possible no. 6.jpg (12165 bytes)

Possible future design #6:   A right flowing trunk, drooping branch bringing the eye back to the strong basal trunk.

Meislik MPBF future possible no.7.jpg (14523 bytes)

Possible future design #7:   A non-traditional crossing branch adds drama and tension.

Meislik MPBF future possible no. 8.jpg (12209 bytes)

Possible future design #8: Wide canopy adds a tropical feel. The tree almost looks like its planted on a stone.

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS BY JERRY MEISLIK:

These are only a few possible concepts out of an infinite variety of future designs. Each design emphasizes some of the treešs unique physical attributes. The artist, in collaboration with the tree, selects the attributes to be emphasized and removes or hides the attributes to be minimized. The artist has the dual role of keeping the tree healthy while guiding the tree to the ultimate design concept. Manšs will can only go so far. If the tree grows in certain ways the chosen design will be altered to accommodate the tree's will.
