FUKU-BONSAI & EcoQube Air

On Dec. 9, 2016 I got this email:

Hey David!

I'm Kevin the Founder and CEO of EcoQube.

I'm a HUGE fan of your schefflera bonsai and I've gifted it to over 20 people.

I would like to recommend it to 10,000 of our customers. Specifically the owners of our newest product: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kevinzl/ecoqube-air-the-coolest-desktop-greenhouse-ever

What do you think would be the best way to recommend them to purchase the bonsai from you?  Here's mine!   =)

I checked out the website, and saw it included several photos of Kevin's Fuku-Bonsai Desk Size Dwarf Schefflera Lava Planting as part of the Kickstarter presentation.  The following photos were included:

I learned that EcoQube began with an unique desktop aquarium as shown in the photo Kevin first sent me. It includes light, temperature and a unique filtration concept.  With my past Micro-Lobster experience, I can see Kevin's group were innovators and he enjoyed our lava planting.

"EcoQube Air" is the newest innovation of the group that attempts to create an optimum environment for plants with light, water, humidity, temperature, etc. In this first photo from their website, the Fuku-Bonsai desk size Dwarf Scheffera lava planting is dramatically shown in the new EcoQube Air.

Here's another photo with the desk size lava planting again dramatically centered in the EcoQube Air.  With the LED lighting the tree, it certainly stand out in front of that black background and I began to imagine how great our other trees would appear in such a setting.  It is similar to how attractive aged large bonsai are exhibited in Japanese tokonoma display areas.

Fuku-Bonsai's desk size lava plantings are generally trained to be just 8" to 10" tall.  They add a lot of aged character to such a small display unit!

A third photo from their website shows the character and beauty of the lava planted tree that is generally 5 to 8 years in training when sold.  The porous lava is about 5" long and is ideal for the EcoQube Air as there's no loose potting media to clog or damage the water pump in the unit.   In a later email, Kevin stated:

"We recommend them to set their EcoQube Air pumps on the "low" setting for established plants as it will "flood" the roots every 7 days. Which has worked very well for me."

This fourth photo from their website shows the control unit  with a side view of the EcoQube with the desk size Dwarf Scheffera lava planting inside the unit.

On March 6, 2017, I received an email from Eric Jordon, who had received his EcoQube Air, requested recommendations, and that same day accepted my recommendations, ordered by phone with credit card authorization.  The next day, we shipped a similar desk size Dwarf Schefflera Lava Planting by FedEx with expected arrival March 9, 2017.  I noticed there was extra room at the top so selected a little taller one that had more vertically oriented growth. I forwarded Eric's email to Kevin Liang of EcoQube Air.

On March 10, I received this in an email from Eric:

David, thank You for all of your information. I received my miniature tree yesterday and I couldn't be happier with it. The character of the tree and the tight root structure are both phenomenal. I couldn't find anything remotely this nice in my area for twice the price even.

As for your comment that it was recommended not to use any of the additional gravel because it would clog the pump, that is confusing to me. The pump is in a lower reservoir and only pumps water back up to the grow tray. Seems if the gravel was rinsed well that it wouldn't be a factor in clogging the pump. Maybe I will contact them directly. They've been very good to respond.  - - - Eric

I forwarded a reply with a copy to Kevin Liang at EcoQube Air, who also emailed his thoughts to Eric, and on March 11, 2017,  I received the following  email from Eric:

David and Kevin,    hopefully, this email finds you both well. I wanted to give you an update on the setup that I finally decided on. I'm hoping all of the photos will attach. If not, I will definitely get them all to you.  I used the clay beads that came with the EcoQube Air as a base for the Fuku Bonsai. I chiseled a small amount of the tree's base so it would fit nicely in the grow tray. After placing the tree I covered the clay beads with larger aquarium gravel for aesthetic purposes. I placed the greenhouse over the tree and Voila. It looks great.  Any recommendations from either of you would be welcomed. I'm thrilled with both products. Thank You both so much.  - - - Eric Jordon (Marysville, Ohio)

He attached the following photos (with his edited captions added)

It was a great start; but being a nit-piker, I recommended:  1)   Adding more white stones to lift up the lava planting about 1/2" so the base of the rock will be sitting on the white stones above the black tank edge when seen from a distance.  2) There seems to be a vertical lamp in the back center but you can see stuff in the background which is distracting.  Consider cutting a thick white paper to cover the background on both sides of the vertical lamp to get a better background.  3)  Then take a photo from farther away to show the entire EcoQube with YOUR FACE behind and just above the EcoQube with a great big smile!  It would show the lava planting as if it were "framed" and show the size of the EcoQube and how the desk size Dwarf Schefflera I selected for you compares to the one that Kevin has that was used on their website. Look forward to seeing the photo!   My mahalo and congratulations on a great set-up photo story!  ~~~David
