- Morgan and Delaney visit us in 2002 and were one of the first to take the Premium Keiki Bonsai Workshop. They were great! Premium Keiki Bonsai Workshop Package (PKBWP-8) continues to be our most popular best-value workshop!
CONVERSION KITS include a plastic bonsai pot and three grades and amounts of pre-screened, pre-measured potting media which is the same as the one used by Fuku-Bonsai at our Kurtistown nursery. Conversion Kits are described at the bottom of this page. While it's more costly to assemble the kit and to ship it from Hawaii, a number of our customers find it is preferable for them as comparable potting mixtures just are not available. It's also good in that we are very familiar with the media and can better advise.
However, for those with some bonsai knowledge or who want to economize I recommend purchasing one kit to test it against the potting materials you are currently using. This will give you a strong idea of how fast drainage is needed indoors. Once schools or bonsai clubs understand that True Indoor Bonsai requires an extremely fast-draining potting mix without clay, they order prepared bonsai stock as needed and provide their own potting materials. I am happy to advise how to adjust soil mixes.
MagAmp is a unique pelletized fertilizer that very reliably controls release of a tiny amount of nutrients over a very long period of time and is especially recommended for Fuku-Bonsai's True Indoor Bonsai. Under special repackaging permission, small quantities are now available to our customers. (See below)
Fuku-Bonsai features workshops of three levels of difficulties and these are labeled: "Beginner," "Intermediate," and "Advanced." My experienced bonsai friends really think I've made it too easy and that even a four-year old child can do it! Use a larger pot with a small lava planting and a desk size lava planting to create a bit of a scene. Move the plants around until you have a pleasing composition, then allow roots to enter the larger pot for very strong growth. This package has the potential for a lot of creativity. Do you want a single complex planting with the two rocks and foliage mass blending or would you want it with something in the middle? Would white sand suggest a river or an ocean shoreline?
BEGINNER WORKSHOP PACKAGE #5 (BWS-5) HM8 medium + #17 conversion kit (17"x12"x2" oval pot) + Handbook: $140.90 + $12 shipping. This has become an increasingly popular high-success choice. It's relatively simple to pot the Medium size lava Planting (which already has a lot of character)! While similar to a workshop with an 8LS Living Sculpture, this one is easier and results in having a nice tree growing over a rocky mound.

The large size lava plantings are impressive specimens that have been in training for over 10 years. INTERMEDIATE WORKSHOPS mean potting but with greater skill required in the handling of the roots as they are not confined and established in the rock and it is possible to damage the roots. In repotting, whenever you may loose some roots, it is necessary to prune a proportional amount of top growth. If your group already has the workshop date scheduled, reserve plants two-three months ahead and request that we allow them to overgrow. We'll be happy to set them aside and build them up a bit. There are two types of intermediate workshops:

It's simple to teach bonsai basics as the principles are now very well known and
you need not be an "expert" to teach basic bonsai. Our workshop packages
allow most adults to learn without a teacher present. These are very successful with

MagAmp is a superior unique pelletized fertilizer that reliably releases a tiny amount of nutrients over a long period of time for ideal houseplant and orchid growth. It is not easily available in most areas and usually only available in professional quantities in 50 pound sacks; repackaged with permission by Fuku-Bonsai to make it available for our customers.

Unique dependable controlled release is due to the chemical composition rather than less dependable coatings. The relatively low nitrogen and high phosphorus ratios produces durable drought-resistant growth recommended for orchids, houseplants, and our TRUE INDOOR BONSAI. Fuku-Bonsai has been using MagAmp in our nursery production since 1973. It is only available to distributors in minimum pallet or container quantities in regions such as Hilo where there is a large orchid industry that needs dependable nutrient release. It is available to professional growers in 50-pound sacks. We have received permission from Sumitomo Corporation of America to repackage to make this ideal product available to our customers.
"ENRICHED WATER" for dip-saturation of lava plantings or potted plants in moderate indoor light. Add one tablespoon of coarse MagAmp to one quart of water. Pour water into a bowl, soak the rock planting or potted plant (up to the pot rim) for 30 minutes or more. Extra water can be poured back into the water container and reused. Add new water to fill the jar. Every few months, add enough new MagAmp so total in a quart of water is one tablespoon. In areas of hard water, use distilled or reverse osmosis water.
INCORPORATION INTO POTTING MEDIA. For stronger growth of potted plants growing in high-light combination indoor-outdoor environments during the warmer seasons. 4" pots: Bury a total of 1/2 tsp. of MagAmp in 4 corners. 8" pots: Bury a total of 1 tsp of MagAmp in 4 corners. 12" pots: Bury a total of 1 tablespoon in several holes in the media. Repeat every 6 months for overlapping continuing fertilizer release.

Customers have been increasingly requesting assistance in providing them with a suitable "indoor bonsai soil." Most potting soils in garden shops tend to be mostly organic material that holds too much water. We've been able to help some to develop their own mixes, but this tended to be very frustrating as it was necessary to purchase bags of several items, combine them, and end up with more than what was needed!

We will continue to assist those wanting to make up their own while also making our material available. Unfortunately, the cost of the shipping is more than the cost of the materials.
