INTRODUCING THE PREMIUM INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE (PIWP)

The Introductory Workshop Package (IWP) introduced in 2007 was a major breakthrough and the "Bonsai Educational Holy Grail" that is the easiest and most successful way to learn (or teach) bonsai.  It's a small economical kit with all needed components, extensive information, and featuring "Prepared Bonsai Stock" (PBS) that we pre-train for our HS8 Small Size Lava Plantings.

THE NEW PREMIUM INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE (PIWP) IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS OF THE MID-PACIFIC BONSAI FOUNDATION.  IF YOU ARE NOT A CURRENT MEMBER, PLEASE ADD $12 AND WRITE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON JOINING.

The Premium Introductory Workshop Package (PIWP) being introduced 7 years later features "Premium Prepared Bonsai Stock" (PPBS)  that are older and meet the higher standards to go into our Desk Size Lava Plantings.  This is significant and if you compare our HS8 and HD8, you'll quickly understand the huge difference!  It took a while to build our inventory as PPBS is really the basis for all Fuku-Bonsai product other than the HS8 Small Lava Plantings and the Introductory Workshop Package.

PPBS go into the Desk Size Lava Plantings but are also up-potted and trained for all other older and higher standard products.  So when starting with higher standard stock, the potential of the Premium Introductory Workshop Package is also much higher --- even for beginners who are creating their first bonsai!  The result is a small/medium bonsai.  Once potted at the end of the workshop, it can go in either of three directions.

        1.    CREATE A SMALL BONSAI.  Obtain strong vigorous growth and give it the best possible growing environment and keep building out the tree,  pruning back to add just a little more growth onto a high potential structure that already has a lot of character.  After a few years,  you can begin pruning more heavily to move into refinement for a nice small/medium bonsai.

       2.    UP-POT AND GROW-ON FOR A LARGER BONSAI.  Once you build out your tree to near the standards of our 8LS8,  you can up-pot into a #17 Conversion Kit and reset your goal for a larger Custom Collection size bonsai! By taking it up in stages,  you'll be better able to control the growth.

       3.   TAKE ON THE MORE DIFFICULT CHALLENGE TO CREATE MINI-BONSAI!  To do this successfully,  you need to have the best possible growing environment.  Supplemental light next to a window can produce good growth, but the best growth is outdoors when night temperatures are above 55F. This requires a higher level of skill and joining the Beginner Study Group is highly recommended.  But the benefits of growing mini-bonsai makes this exciting!  You can have a nice varied collection indoors in a relatively small indoor space.  Mini-bonsai have a much shorter development and refinement training period.  With ideal growing conditions, you'll have the potential for great results in just a year or two.  If you create several mini-bonsai,  you'll have the components to make "temporary saikei" arrangements that uses sets of rocks and plants to create a range of landscapes that can be enjoyed for a while, restored to mini-bonsai with other item going into storage.  When a new design emerges, the components can be arranged again!  This is the ultimate form of True Indoor Bonsai for those with limited indoor growing areas!

WE ARE COMPLETING OUR FIELD-TESTING AND WRITING THE CULTURAL SHEETS!  We are taking orders (at special Super Mahalo Sale pricing).  There are three basic qualities of stock if specified:  1) To create a Sumo type small or larger grown-on bonsai.  2) To create a Roots-type bonsai (extended roots, exposed roots, or future root-over-rock bonsai).  3) To create mini-bonsai with a smaller tree with more detail and compact growth.  We have not yet created specifications for this third option and a new product currently is being conceptualized.

A NEW PRODUCT CURRENTLY BEING CONCEPTUALIZED!

 3.  TO CREATE MINI-BONSAI WITH A SMALLER BUT  MORE DEVELOPED OLDER TREES WITH MORE DETAIL AND COMPACT GROWTH.

For serious bonsai hobbyists who have limited indoor space,  this is an exciting concept with very high potential.  Increasingly,  special compact individual plant lamps are being developed that could create an ideal environment for a single mini-bonsai.  A modified 4' fluorescent unit providing directional light that counters the directional light from windows could make uniform growth possible that is superior to having lights only above with foliage stretching and growing upwards instead of outwards.

Such an option would vary from the two basic Sumo and Roots currently envisioned for the PIWP.  It likely will include a smaller container and may include components scaled to that container size, but with a more carefully graded components to address the more exacting requirements for mini-bonsai. Besides the plant being of the highest standards,  the cultural sheet would need to be much more carefully written.  My current concept is to use the smaller container used with the IWP, but make major changes in providing a PIWP,  different components,  and cultural sheet.

I believe such a package would be ideal for serious hobbyists who want to do the final stages of training.  MPBF members are invited to write for more information or to be involved in designing and field-testing this item to me at david.f@fukubonsai.com
