FUKU-BONSAI CULTURAL CENTER
INDIVIDUAL OR FAMILY WORKSHOPS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK
OR GROUP WORKSHOPS ON SATURDAYS!

You are cordially invited to visit the Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center & Hawaii State Bonsai Repository in Kurtistown on the Big Island of Hawaii to view an exceptional varied bonsai collection that includes Japanese bonsai, Chinese penjing, Hawaiian tropical outdoor bonsai, and the original prototypes of our True Indoor Bonsai specialty.  The collection includes memorial bonsai created by past Hawaii masters as well as trees created in Hawaii by visiting international masters.

Select from the largest inventory of certified True Indoor Bonsai that can be shipped to all parts of the United States.

CONSIDER LEARNING BY TAKING A WORKSHOP OR JOINING OUR BEGINNER STUDY GROUP!

In 2007,  Fuku-Bonsai made a transformational breakthrough when it introduced the INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE.  It was the long sought “Bonsai Educational Holy Grail” and since then, thousands of kits have been shipped all over the United States and it’s used to teach bonsai to groups and as part of Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center workshops.  It has become the most successful way to learn (or teach) bonsai!

There're four major ways to utilize the Introductory Workshop Packages:   1) The most common Sumo with the accent rock under and tied to the tree to create an impressive buttressing trunk-root-rock base. 2)  The accent rock is trimmed and fitted to add character to a weak area to create a more attractive "tree and rock scene."  3)  Compress the roots to grow down to become a future tall exposed root design.  Or 4)  Trim the rock to split the roots while extending the roots to prepare the tree to be a future "root-over-tall rock" planting.

Since January 2013 when we began publishing the monthly email JOURNAL OF TROPICAL & TRUE INDOOR BONSAI,  individuals from all parts of the United States (including Hawaii) who are interested in learning on an on-going basis have joined the Fuku-Bonsai Beginner Study Group.  By mastering the four basic IWP training routes study group members have a common skill and knowledge base as we build a Tropical & True Indoor Bonsai community.

By email they submit project photo and caption reports and receive individual assistance and critiques.  The Beginner Study Group format establishes a pattern for new members.  Upon “graduating," some continue into our Fast-Track Study Group to work on individual customized projects.  These individuals get special access to PREMIUM PREPARED BONSAI STOCK and other Fuku-Bonsai products and personal email assistance.

WORKSHOP ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO VISIT THE FUKU-BONSAI CULTURAL CENTER IN KURTISTOWN MONDAYS THRU FRIDAYS.

Most first time visitors who just learn of the workshops have limited time.  For them the basics of one workshop can be completed in 30 minutes and the completed planting sent to all parts of the U.S. to arrive after the participant return home. Some learn about the workshops on the Internet,  learn more by contacting us by email, set up appointments, and come to the Big Island specifically to take a workshop here.  Others learn of the workshops through Big Island visitor guide books after they arrive on the Big Island and already in the area.

Those seeking an on-going hobby are encouraged to join the Beginner Study Group,  become members of the Mid-Pacific Bonsai Foundation ($12 per year), and start with four Introductory Workshop Packages.  More information about the Beginner Study Group is posted at www.fukubonsai.com/1a4a.html .   Prior appointments are recommended for large groups, intermediate or advanced workshop assistance.

Please request more information.  Many of the workshop participants later email that the workshops were the highlight of their Hawaiian vacations.

BEGINNER STUDY GROUP – SATURDAY MORNING 9AM

FOR VISITORS OR HAWAII RESIDENTS: To accommodate those wanting a longer beginner workshop that could include a pre-demonstration and discussion, those already in the Beginner Study Group (or those ready to start) are encouraged to participate as a group.

The Saturday morning workshops are especially geared to bring together Hawaii residents.  Bonsai is especially enjoyable when done with others.  By meeting others who may live nearby, we hope to build groups on all Hawaiian islands as well as in West Hawaii.  Of course,  this would also be a nice opportunity for those growing bonsai in the continental U.S. to meet beginning growers on Saturday mornings and more advanced growers in the afternoon.

FAST-TRACK STUDY GROUP - SATURDAY AFTERNOON 1PM

FAST-TRACK STUDY GROUP MEMBERS (INCLUDING HAWAII RESIDENTS AND MEMBERS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD) ARE ENCOURAGED TO EMAIL AHEAD TO MAKE PLANS FOR SPECIAL PROJECTS OR TO PARTICIPATE IN SPECIAL GROUP PROJECTS.

Increasingly,  visitors are coming especially to participate in Fuku-Bonsai workshops.  In the past, when we know a long-time customer or study group member is coming, we may set up a special workshop especially for that person. If the person is visiting for several days, an individual workshop may be scheduled for a week day and the person may participate in a more complex group project on Saturday.

Sometimes a project requires more than one day as when preparing rocks for planting or as parts of landscapes is done on one day with planting on another day.  This could be two consecutive days or two or more days separated by several days depending upon the person's Hawaiian vacation plans. Setting aside Saturday afternoons increase the possibility of being able to meet other fast-track study group members.

                  Please request more information.

YOU'RE INVITED TO JOIN THE TROPICAL
& TRUE INDOOR BONSAI COMMUNITY!

The Saturday activities will compliment and help create a larger community to be led by the partnership of Fuku-Bonsai and the Mid-Pacific Bonsai Foundation as part of our overall project: "MAKING THE BIG ISLAND AN INTERNATIONAL BONSAI MECCA!"  While Fuku-Bonsai committed to lead the project when it incorporated in 1985,  we were side-tracked in 1989 when we sprayed defective Benlate contaminated with weed killers and suffered losses of over $30 million.

We were forced into a 25-year long battle for survival as the net proceeds from the 1994 Benlate product liability and the 2007 DuPont fraud settlements after taxes and legal costs were less than 10% of our losses.  But we survived while many of the other 5,000+ who filed lawsuits against DuPont are no longer in business.  Life is not fair, but we continued to be committed to the education, promotion, and preservation of the art and cultures of bonsai.

We partnered with the 501(3)(c) Mid-Pacific Bonsai Foundation to form a large scale vertically integrated entity to co-sponsor the Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center & Hawaii State Bonsai Repository and the www.fukubonsai.com website.  The website has grown to be over 3,000 pages and is the premier educational resource regarding Tropical and True Indoor Bonsai.  In January 2013, we began publishing the monthly email JOURNAL OF TROPICAL & TRUE INDOOR BONSAI which includes articles written by members of our Beginner Study Group,  Fast-Track Study Group, and Journal contributing editors.  Our hope is that the number of participants and writers grow to provide valid content for the Journal to inspire and assist future generations in the post-Fukumoto era.

Dwarf Schefflera is the most durable proven houseplant with ideal bonsai traits.  It is the best and only plant that can be grown in all parts of the country because home and office temperatures are the same.  In addition, Dwarf Scheff can be grown outdoors whenever night temperatures are above 55°F.  It is amongst the fastest growing and can be trained into more styles than any other plant grown as bonsai.  But the key to creating highest quality bonsai is to have multiple trunks, low branches and a lot of character within 1" of the soil line and a compact complex root system within 1/2" of that soil line.  ALL OF THE TREES GROWN BY FUKU-BONSAI  MEET THIS STANDARD!

By utilizing our proprietary techniques, we create character.  Only the strongest plants survive and we consider that those that die are part of the process of "culling out weak plants!"  We grow strong high-quality plants in the ideal growing environment in huge quantities with the best professional techniques to produce extraordinary starter trees to give our customers the highest quality highest success plants available.

The reality is that every single plant grown as bonsai has its own techniques.  We are successful because we primarily write and teach Dwarf Schefflera while all bonsai books try to explain various techniques but it is not clear which technique applies to which plant and this causes a lot of confusion. Readers of such books cannot obtain the specific plants and plants obtained on the Internet will not automatically grow where the reader lives and may not be able to be grown indoors where people want to grow them!  FUKU-BONSAI TRUE INDOOR BONSAI ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL GIFT BONSAI FOR ANYONE, ANYWHERE WHO CAN GROW HOUSEPLANTS!

In 2000,  Fuku-Bonsai made the major breakthrough to consistently create character in trees within 1" of the soil line and this was the key to creating our highest quality Hawaiian Lava Plantings as the trees are pre-trained before being rock-planted.  It took seven years to build inventory to create the INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE that was the long sought "Educational Bonsai Holy Grail."  THE INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE IS THE EASIEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL WAY TO LEARN (OR TEACH) BONSAI!

Those who complete the Beginner Study Group and "graduate" and become members of the Fast-Track Study Group have huge win-win benefits.  They receive personalized assistance on their custom projects.  They get access to outstanding older plants that were grown with techniques taught in the workshops.  If you understand how plants are developed with the four basic training methods taught in the Beginner Study Group,  you can obtain older plants and continue to create more complex bonsai without having to train each one. THE MEMBERS OF THE FAST-TRACK STUDY GROUP HAVE ACCESS AND RECEIVE DISCOUNTS WHEN PURCHASING OLDER PRE-TRAINED TREES NOT AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE HUNDREDS OF FAST-TRACK STUDY GROUP MEMBERS AND ASSOCIATES GROWING OUR TREES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES!  THIS IS WIN-WIN!  In knowing our trees well,  they become effective True Indoor Bonsai teachers in their area and may even form clubs!  In producing articles for the Journal,  there is significant valid content to inspire and assist others.  As Fuku-Bonsai continues to recover,  there will be other benefits.  Seven years after the Introductory Workshop Package was introduced,  we are now producing a superior higher standard PREMIUM PREPARED BONSAI STOCK that is the basis for the higher quality of our older Hawaiian Lava Plantings, Potted Bonsai, and Custom Collection.  These plants will be made available to our Fast Track Study Group members and associates to create Premium Workshop Packages and exciting bonsai!

FUKU-BONSAI IS NOW MAKING FINAL SELECTION OF IT'S PERMANENT EXHIBIT COLLECTION AND THE LARGE NUMBER NOT SELECTED WILL BECOME AVAILABLE FIRST TO THE MEMBERS OF THE FAST-TRACK STUDY GROUP,  PAST PURCHASERS OF CUSTOM COLLECTION, AND OUR OLDEST CUSTOMERS.  This will assure that these high-quality bonsai end up in the hands of those who have the ability to grow and improve them.  Articles have begun to appear in the Journal of Tropical and True Indoor Bonsai.  All of these are reasons to consider joining the Tropical and True Indoor Bonsai community. Please contact David Fukumoto at david.f@fukubonsai.com for more information.
