ALOHA & MAHALO!

After 22 years, I am humbled, pleased and proud to report that our epic battle for survival is almost over.  With the help of a 2010 USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant,  Fuku-Bonsai nursery is largely rebuilt and we are again committed and growing for the future! Life is not fair. Most companies hit with a $30+ million loss would disappear and I still do not fully understand how we survived!

We had a lot of help from friends, stockholders, associates, and the local and bonsai community. Huge credit goes to our loyal repeat customers and; on behalf of everyone associated with Fuku-Bonsai, I thank you!  After many years of computer problems, I'm delighted we can send complete issues of the FBnews. It's great to receive emails from old friends and customers and also new subscribers.

I am most proud that we retained our values and standards and actually improved products during the crisis. Now, with adequate bench space, we are potting up and properly spacing a full range of trees.  We continue trials seeking improved methods to grow superior products for greater customer success.  In looking back to when we began, bonsai was almost impossibly difficult and traditional outdoor bonsai was only for the elite and fanatics.

Fuku-Bonsai changed that. Our TRUE INDOOR BONSAI™ are now the most successful gift bonsai for anyone, anywhere who can grow houseplants!

FUKU-BONSAI IS COMMITTED TO CUSTOMER SUCCESS!

There really are no secrets.  You need to understand how and why character develops over the years,  then replicate nature for a lot of years!  The rules of success are simple and logical.  Start with the tree that can thrive for you in your specific environment,  obtain as much character as possible to inspire a vision of a beautiful future, then develop the discipline and the nurturing spirit so the tree will grow vigorously in a mutually dependent relationship!

Dwarf Schefflera is the most durable, ideal houseplant bonsai.  It can be trained into more shapes than any other plant and Fuku-Bonsai has become the premier source of younger prepared bonsai stock, semi-trained bonsai, and older specimen custom collection trees.  Each year we learn more.  Our website contains the most educational material and this will continue to expand.

Our current Fuku-Bonsai 1:10 Project creates high-potential beautiful trees in very shallow containers.  I thought it would be a worthy challenge to train our staff and invited Ron Davis of Montana to research alongside of us. We feature his reports in this issue and invite those who are already successful in growing our plants to join the Fuku-Bonsai Study Group to also be a part of this project. We are making major breakthroughs in all three styling concepts:  "SUMO,"  "ROOTS," and "HAWAIIAN DRAGONS"  as well as the corollary applications.

BONSAI IS AT A HISTORIC CROSSROADS

Whereas traditional outdoor Japanese Bonsai was the result of the unique Japanese cultural character of the past, even the modern Japanese generation struggle to acquire the exacting skills and maintain the extraordinary level of discipline.  We were part of the international bonsai movement in the 1970's to 1990's when bonsai popularity peaked with an explosion of new influences as the World War II generation passed the bonsai torch to us.

Fuku-Bonsai continues to pioneer TRUE INDOOR BONSAI and great strides have been made since our 1962 roots.  At a time of sharply rising costs and bonsai nurseries closing,  we are holding our prices and recommitting to expand into the future.  We are refining our concepts, training our successor team and invite you to join us.

Fuku-Bonsai is beginning a new era with a greater emphasis on education and providing exceptional high-potential plants as part of workshop packages, as gifts, or as specimen bonsai.  While the Hawaiian Lava Plantings make great easy-care successful gifts for anyone, anywhere who can grow houseplants,  the Potted Bonsai are improving and great for anyone who wants faster growth to train bonsai.

INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE  (BONSAI WORKSHOP I)   is the most economical way to start.. If you really want to learn to grow bonsai (or even to teach bonsai), the Introductory Workshop Package is ideal and quantity discounts and teacher assistance are available.  An reprint of a published article shows how the package was effectively used at Fuku-Bonsai with a mixed group that included 5 to 10 year olds.

BONSAI WORKSHOP II  introduced in the past year takes a larger, older 4LL8 Living Lovable Potted Bonsai and #8 Conversion Kit and moves it up to become a nice medium size bonsai that will develop into something like our 8LS8 Living Sculpture.  In this issue there are three articles that show Sumo, Roots, and Hawaiian Dragons.  We have a more challenging shallow saucer-pot option available and this issue includes reports by Ron Davis who is working with us!

BONSAI WORKSHOP III is available and takes a larger older 8LS8 Living Sculpture Potted Bonsai and a #17 Conversion Kit and moves it up to become a larger bonsai that will develop into something like our 17LS8 or Custom Collection.  We'll have photo-articles of this in the next FBnews issue. This is the most popular workshop at the Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center for those who have succeeded in growing our plants vigorously for a few years.  You'll get personalized attention and assistance. Visitors often write back that it was the highlight of their trip to the Big Island of Hawaii.  If you write ahead, I'll try to be here and assist.

I thank you for your support through the years and welcome to those who just learned of us.  All best wishes for a happy, healthy holiday season and a great 2012!

On June 17, 2010, 25 participants including 5 to 10 year olds, teenagers, and adult staff arrived for a bonsai introduction and workshop!  (Reprinted by author reproduction rights from the Fall 2010 issue of the American Bonsai Society Journal)  INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGES ARE IDEAL FOR TEACHING INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS!
INTRODUCING BONSAI WORKSHOP II!
Our Bonsai Workshop I (Introductory Workshop Package) has been an outstanding success and increasingly being sent for beginner bonsai classes. They are ideal for beginners and economical when purchasing under quantity discounts. Our newest workshop package is also a high-success, high-value package that is becoming popular with visitors to the Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center! We are delighted to see beginners starting with more advanced material. There's a bonsai truism that the result at the end of the workshop is largely determined by the materials at the start of the workshop.

BONSAI WORKSHOP II - HAWAIIAN DRAGONS!
This photo sequence shows a non-standard option that utilizes the shallower 9"x1" deep saucer-pot with pre-drilled custom drainage holes with the other items in the #8 conversion kit including the various potting media, plastic separator, Nutrient Granules, and cultural sheet.  It also includes a plastic pot collar to help initially firm the potting media. If you want to advance into the more difficult 1:10 Project challenge, please first contact David Fukumoto at david.f@fukubonsai.com to join the Fuku-Bonsai Study Group to get personal assistance.  The following pages are reports from Ron Davis who was the first to attempt the shallow saucer-pot challenge.

RON'S 1:10 PROJECT
Ron Davis of Montana has visited several times and was introduced to our then new Fuku-Bonsai 1:10 Project on his most recent visit.  I encouraged him to join us in researching the concepts and culture of houseplant bonsai in shallow saucer-pots ten times wider that deep.  This would greatly upgrade the standards of houseplant bonsai.  He took me up on the challenge to create eight unique bonsai and got a special deal that included media, shallow saucer-pots, and eight choice 2" prepared bonsai stock!  Here are the first five reports:
Introduction and Report #1-Sumo
          Report #2 - Roots
Report #3 - Planting between rocks
          Report #4 - Dragons
Report #5 - Rock pile planting
INTERESTING EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE!
This email series with "SD-Florida" began as a possible problem but contains some interesting other issues.  This may lead to the ability for those who want to grow moss to do so successfully indoors.  This may also be a factor to aid in creating aerial roots!
