Aloha and Welcome to the seventh issue as we build a national
Tropical & True Indoor Bonsai Community!
ISSUE #7. JULY 2013

Aloha! With the summer growing season at its peak,  interest in growing and training our TRUE INDOOR BONSAI is approaching an all time high!

We appreciate our loyal customers who purchase and enjoy our plants.  So I try to write and edit the Journal of Tropical & True Indoor Bonsai so that even if you enjoy doing only minor training,  we'll pass on tips so it you'll be more successful and able to improve the health of your plants.  I also get notes that it's interesting to learn how the trees are trained and about Fuku-Bonsai's techniques that grow the highest quality,  high-success True Indoor Bonsai.

We want to include those who grow tropical bonsai indoors with supplemental lighting and outdoors in warmer weather.  I appreciate contributing editor Jerry Meislik who this month reports on the new public bonsai collection at the University of Michigan.  His old buddies are amongst the leaders of growing bonsai utilizing supplemental light and it's great to see their efforts to create a major new bonsai resource in Michigan!  Congratulations!

Since we began issuing the Journal, more are starting to understand that TRUE INDOOR BONSAI is a unique form of Tropical Bonsai,  and in spite of its name,  Dwarf Schefflera performs in a superior manner when grown outdoors when night temperatures are above 55°F or those who grow True Indoor Bonsai with additional supplemental light and that's great. Our goal is to create a "Tropical & True Indoor Bonsai" community that is a celebration of diversity.

To encourage those who want to learn,  there are TWO STUDY GROUP SPECIALS with sale to start July 21 and end August 20, 2013::

     I.    BEGINNER STUDY GROUP SPECIAL.  For those with no experience and no known nearby bonsai instructors:  THREE EACH INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGES: 20% OFF AND FREE SHIPPING.  Regular:  $74.85.  JULY JOURNAL SPECIAL:  $59.88 (includes complimentary items and personal email assistance; please email for more information).

II.   FAST-TRACK STUDY GROUP SPECIAL.  "Fast-Trackers" are those in a hurry and willing to make mistakes or, those with several years of experience in traditional outdoor bonsai who want to get into older TRUE INDOOR BONSAI plants faster!   ONE EACH INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP PACKAGE AND 2 EACH INTERMEDIATE BONSAI WORKSHOP PACKAGES:  20% OFF AND FREE SHIPPING.  Regular:  $174.85.  JULY JOURNAL SPECIAL:  $139.88 (includes complimentary items and personalized assistance; please email for more information).

This issue include articles about two Fast-Track Study Group members:  Ryan Chang of Hawaii began with a bunch of Introductory Workshop Packages, has visited and taken workshops at Fuku-Bonsai, and is expanding his collection as he has a lot of outdoor growing space.  He's getting better at obtaining stronger growth and I'm trying to give him the tools to visualize and create bonsai designs.  In this issue, we share learning (and teaching) by drawing.

George McLean is the newest member from Montana.  He's got some experience and now has the time to take on challenges.  I think the Introductory Workshop Package was too easy until he realized it's potential.  He did great dragon work.

Ryan, George, Russ, Travis, and others are working on or will be starting a full range of rock-planting challenges in the coming months.  Now's the time to join us!  Please email me at david.f@fukubonsai.com  for more information!  Regards and aloha!  ~~~David

THE NEW BONSAI & PENJING GARDEN AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
By Journal contributing editor Jerry Meislik as he introduces and reports on the opening of the newest public bonsai collection!

LESSON #7:  CREATING THE CROWN!
Training bonsai requires basic techniques.  Our most important lessons are all in one place.  This is the basic way to start training the crown of a bonsai.
INTRODUCING GEORGE McLEAN'S SUMO IWP!
George is a bit different.  He created the shortest first report, then increased his standard,  redid good work,  redid better work,  redid much better work, and ended up with a great result!
GEORGE McLEAN'S TOP & BOTTOM DRAGON!
George is a perfectionist and he proved he can do good work the first time around with extraordinary preparation and even a "dry-run trial corn bonsai!"
LEARNING (& TEACHING) BY DRAWING
Ryan Chang, the leader of the Fast-track Study Group is learning by being taught to make drawings. This article shares his lessons by David Fukumoto and teaches some of the basic principles of how and where to prune and what to expect if the tree is growing strongly.
REVISITING "PROBLEMS, SYMPTOMS, & FIRST AID!
With the help and input of Donald Lee of Georgia,  we confirm a proven technique for underwatered plants!
MAILBAG June-July 2013
Four items:  Ray Willard's  LED lights,  another successful "REHYDRATION VIA SOAKING!",  creating a "deployment collection" to fit in a shoe-box,  and IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR ACCESS ROAD!
