BONSAI ARE NOT STUNTED PLANTS! They must be healthy plants that are maintained in
the desired size and shape by pruning. Trees that are not growing vigorously are not
trainable. Your bonsai training results are dictated by the material that you start with.
If you start with young seedlings with no character, at the end of your
training session, you will still have a young seedling with little or no character!
IT
IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT FUKU-BONSAI IS A SKILLED PROFESSIONAL GROWER
OF "PREPARED BONSAI STOCK." That means that ALL plants are
heavily trained from when they are newly sprouted seedlings and cuttings that
have just rooted. By starting training when plants are very young, we
can develop branches and extraordinary character
on the low parts of the trunk as this cannot be added later! WE CULL
RUTHLESSLY! While plants are very young we cull out weak plants or those
that do not branch well. We live in an area that gets a lot of rain for
weeks at a time and the plants develop some resistance to being over-watered
as they never really dry out. But when the sun comes out, we do not baby the
plants so they develop some drought resistance.

skillfully and efficiently grown by Fuku-Bonsai's hard-working staff for several years and
the plants have a lot of character! First, we train small size bonsai and these are then
trained to medium size bonsai which are then trained into large size bonsai. If you
purchase cheap untrained nursery plants and go straight to a large size bonsai, it will
lack the quality and character of trees that have developed through multiple complex
processes from the time they were seedlings! There's no shortcuts to producing the
highest quality plants.

Fuku-Bonsai's standard training utilized "SUMO" (S) styling and these are available
also in #8 size Living Sculpture (8LS8-S), #17 size Living Sculpture, or even the larger Custom
Collection. We've also been training with "ROOTS" (R) styling and these are
now available as #8LS8-R LIVING SCULPTURE. They should be available in the #17 LIVING
SCULPTURE size a few years from now. "HAWAIIAN DRAGON" styling is currently
only available in the smallest Living Lovable styling. The
ROOT-OVER-ROCK #8LS8-RR LIVING SCULPTURE are the aged instructor
demonstration plants from the Keiki Bonsai Workshops given at the Fuku-Bonsai
Cultural Center in Kurtistown.
#8LS LIVING SCULPTURE in 8" diameter x 2" deep pots are ideal bonsai sizes that
fit under artificial light units. These are also ideal for potting up into a #17
Conversion Kit to create your own Custom Collection with you being the trainer!
The new #17LS LIVING SCULPTURE in 17" x 12" x 2" oval pots are an
attractive size for a larger room or office. These were formerly sold as the entry
level high-value Custom Collection and were almost always sold out. We increased
production and they should be available throughout the year.
Fuku-Bonsai's initial primary production
was mostly our popular Hawaiian Lava Plantings that are very easy-care and great gift
items. Since we began our website in 1999, there has been a steady shift as
customers began to enjoy the challenges of training bonsai and sales of 8LS and Custom
Collection greatly increased. Since the smaller Living Lovable was introduced,
there's been another surge of interest including workshops in educational institutions and
even by bonsai clubs that normally train only traditional outdoor bonsai!
When we introduced Living Lovables, initial trees were still young. They are a bit
older now with more character. We try to create extra branches to allow each new
owner-trainer to set the future shape. In the future, more of the website will be on
training ideas and techniques. I'm delighted to know that many more are excited
